Aretha Franklin was born in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1942. Her father was a Baptist minister and her mother was a gospel singer. Aretha started singing in church at a young age, and she quickly developed a powerful voice. When she was 14 years old, she signed a record deal with Columbia Records.
