After graduating from Oxford, Patteson worked as a tutor for a year. In 1850, he was ordained a deacon in the Church of England. He then served as a curate in Uffculme, Devon, for two years.
In 1855, Patteson was appointed the first Anglican bishop of Melanesia. Melanesia is a region of the Pacific Ocean that includes the islands of New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, and Vanuatu. Patteson's diocese was vast, and he traveled extensively throughout the region, preaching the gospel and establishing churches.
Patteson's work in Melanesia was not without its challenges. He faced opposition from both the indigenous people and the European settlers. However, he persevered, and his work began to bear fruit. By the time of his death in 1871, Patteson had established a number of churches and schools in Melanesia.
Patteson was killed on September 20, 1871, by a group of indigenous people on the island of Nukapu. He was martyred for his faith, and his death shocked the Christian world. Patteson's martyrdom was a reminder of the dangers that missionaries faced in their work. However, it also inspired many people to continue to support the work of missions.
Patteson's legacy continues to this day. He is remembered as a great missionary and martyr. His work helped to spread the gospel in Melanesia, and his example continues to inspire Christians around the world.
