The history of Canada is deeply intertwined with the establishment and operation of Indian residential schools, an abhorrent system that sought to assimilate Indigenous children into Euro-Canadian society. These institutions, often referred to as "schools," were in reality prison-like facilities where students endured physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, as well as cultural and linguistic suppression.

The Residential School System

Beginning in the late 19th century, the Canadian government, in collaboration with various religious organizations, implemented a policy of removing Indigenous children from their families and communities and placing them in residential schools. The stated purpose of these schools was to provide education and vocational training, but the reality was far more sinister.

Students were forcibly separated from their families, often at a young age, and forbidden from speaking their native languages or practicing their traditional customs. They were subjected to harsh discipline, including physical and sexual abuse, and many were punished for their Indigenous heritage.

The Lasting Impact

The legacy of Indian residential schools has had a devastating impact on Indigenous communities. Survivors carry the scars of their experiences throughout their lives, suffering from high rates of mental health issues, addiction, and intergenerational trauma.

The schools also resulted in the loss of Indigenous languages, cultures, and traditional knowledge. This cultural genocide has had a profound impact on the identity and well-being of Indigenous peoples in Canada.

Truth and Reconciliation

In 2007, the Canadian government formally apologized for the residential school system and established the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC). The TRC was tasked with investigating the history and impact of residential schools and making recommendations for reconciliation.

The TRC's final report, published in 2015, contained 94 Calls to Action, which set out a path for healing and reconciliation. These Calls to Action include measures such as education about residential schools, support for survivors, and the implementation of Indigenous self-determination.
