By Hellship to Hiroshima is a gripping true story of survival and triumph against all odds. Author Ken Honda recounts his harrowing experiences as a prisoner of war during World War II, including being transported to Japan on a Japanese "hellship" and enduring the atomic bomb attack on Hiroshima.

Honda's story is one of resilience and hope. Despite the unimaginable horrors he endured, he never gave up on life. He found strength in his faith and in the love of his family and friends. His story is a testament to the human spirit's ability to overcome even the most unimaginable adversity.

A Prisoner of War

Honda was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1943. He was assigned to the 106th Infantry Division, which was sent to the Pacific Theater in 1944. Honda's division was involved in the Battle of Okinawa, one of the bloodiest battles of the Pacific War.

In June 1945, Honda was captured by Japanese forces. He was taken to a prisoner of war camp, where he was subjected to harsh treatment. He was beaten, starved, and forced to work long hours in the hot sun.

On a Japanese Hellship

In July 1945, Honda and other prisoners of war were loaded onto a Japanese "hellship." These ships were notorious for their cramped and unsanitary conditions. The prisoners were packed into the holds like sardines. They were given little food or water, and there was no ventilation.

The hellship sailed for two weeks. During that time, many of the prisoners died from disease or starvation. Honda himself became seriously ill. He was so weak that he could barely stand.

The Atomic Bombing of Hiroshima

On August 6, 1945, the hellship arrived in Hiroshima. The prisoners were unloaded and marched to a nearby prisoner of war camp. Honda was so weak that he had to be carried by two other prisoners.

Later that day, the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. The explosion leveled the city and killed an estimated 140,000 people. Honda was badly injured in the blast. He was burned and had shrapnel wounds all over his body.

Survival and Triumph

Honda survived the atomic bombing and the aftermath. He was eventually repatriated to the United States, where he received medical treatment for his injuries.

Despite the horrors he had endured, Honda never gave up on life. He went on to marry and have a family. He also became a successful businessman.

In 1995, Honda wrote By Hellship to Hiroshima. The book is a powerful account of his experiences during World War II. It is a story of survival and triumph that will inspire readers of all ages.
