Ceawlin was born around 530, the son of Cynric, the king of Wessex. He succeeded his father to the throne in 560, and immediately set about expanding his kingdom. He defeated the Britons in a series of battles, and by 577 he had conquered all of southern England from the Thames River to the Bristol Channel.

In 584, Ceawlin led an invasion of Mercia, the kingdom to the north of Wessex. He defeated the Mercians in battle, and established himself as the overlord of the kingdom. This made him the most powerful king in England, and he was now in a position to unite the country under his rule.

However, Ceawlin's reign was not without its challenges. He faced opposition from other Anglo-Saxon kingdoms, and he was also threatened by the Britons, who were still resisting his rule. In 592, Ceawlin was defeated by an alliance of Britons and Anglo-Saxons at the Battle of Wodnesborough. He was forced to flee Wessex, and he died in exile a few years later.
