Early Life and Military Beginnings

Edward Bulfin was born on January 1, 1869, in Clonmel, Ireland. From a young age, he exhibited a keen interest in military affairs and joined the British Army as a teenager. After graduating from the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, Bulfin was commissioned into the Royal Irish Fusiliers in 1889.

Service in the Boer War

Bulfin's first major deployment came during the Boer War in South Africa from 1899 to 1902. As a young officer, he quickly distinguished himself for his bravery and tactical acumen. In particular, his role in the defense of Ladysmith and the advance on Pretoria earned him widespread recognition.

The First World War: A Defining Moment

The outbreak of the First World War in 1914 saw Bulfin thrust into the heart of one of the most brutal conflicts in history. As a brigadier general, he commanded the 28th Brigade in France, where he played a pivotal role in the Battle of the Somme in 1916. Bulfin's leadership during the battle was exemplary, inspiring his men to fight with unwavering courage amidst the horrors of trench warfare.

Supreme Commander in Mesopotamia

In 1917, Bulfin was appointed as the Supreme Commander of the British forces in Mesopotamia (present-day Iraq). The campaign in Mesopotamia was fraught with challenges, including a harsh climate, formidable terrain, and a determined enemy. However, under Bulfin's command, the British forces achieved significant victories, capturing Baghdad in 1917 and ultimately securing control of Mesopotamia.

A Controversial Figure

Despite his military successes, General Bulfin was also a controversial figure. His decision to attack Turkish positions at Khan Baghdadi in 1918 resulted in heavy casualties and cast a shadow over his reputation. Critics accused him of being reckless and dismissive of the lives of his troops.

Later Life and Legacy

After the war, Bulfin retired from the army and returned to Ireland. He remained active in public life and served as a member of the Irish Senate from 1922 to 1928. General Edward Bulfin passed away in Dublin in 1929 at the age of 60.

A Legacy of Forgotten Heroism

General Sir Edward Bulfin's life and military career stand as a testament to the courage, resilience, and leadership qualities that are essential to military success. Despite his controversial legacy, his contributions to the British Empire during the Boer War and the First World War should not be forgotten.

Rediscovering a Forgotten General

The recent publication of the book "General Sir Edward Bulfin Ireland Forgotten General" by renowned military historian Major General Brian J. Farrell aims to shed light on Bulfin's life and career. Through meticulous research and captivating narrative, Farrell presents a balanced and nuanced account of a complex and enigmatic figure.
