By Dale Kent
Lorenzo de' Medici was one of the most brilliant and influential figures of the Italian Renaissance. He was a poet, a statesman, a patron of the arts, and the de facto ruler of Florence for much of his life.
He was born into a wealthy and powerful family, and he received the best education that money could buy. He studied the classics, philosophy, and art. He was also a skilled poet and musician. As a young man, he traveled to many of the courts of Europe, where he learned about the latest trends in art and politics.
In 1469, Lorenzo's father died, and he became the head of the Medici family. He was only 20 years old at the time, but he was already a seasoned politician. He quickly consolidated his power and established himself as the de facto ruler of Florence.
Lorenzo was a brilliant ruler and a great patron of the arts. He commissioned many of the greatest works of art of the Renaissance, including Botticelli's Primavera and Venus. He also founded the Medici School of Platonic Philosophy, which attracted the greatest scholars of the day.
However, Lorenzo's reign was not without its dark side. He was a ruthless politician, and he often resorted to violence to maintain his power. He exiled his political opponents, and he even had some of them murdered.
In 1478, Lorenzo was the target of a conspiracy by the Pazzi family, who wanted to seize power in Florence. Lorenzo was wounded in the attack, but he managed to escape. He then had the Pazzi conspirators executed in a brutal and public display.
Lorenzo died in 1492, at the age of 43. He was succeeded by his son, Piero, who was a much less capable ruler. Under Piero's leadership, Florence fell into chaos and decline.
Lorenzo de' Medici was a complex and fascinating figure. He was a brilliant ruler, a great patron of the arts, and a ruthless politician. His life and times were a reflection of the contradictions of the Italian Renaissance.
In this book, Dale Kent tells the story of Lorenzo de' Medici's life and times. He draws on a wealth of new research to provide a fresh and insightful look at one of the most important figures of the Renaissance.
The Brilliant Life and Violent Times of Lorenzo de' Medici is a must-read for anyone who is interested in the Italian Renaissance. It is a well-written and engaging book that sheds new light on one of the most fascinating periods in history.
