Jose Hernandez was born in Mexico in 1962. His family immigrated to the United States when he was three years old. They settled in California, where Jose's parents worked as migrant farmworkers.
Jose grew up in poverty. His family lived in a small shack with no running water or electricity. He often had to go hungry. But Jose was a bright and determined child. He loved to learn, and he excelled in school.
After graduating from high school, Jose joined the United States Air Force. He served as a mechanic and later as a pilot. After leaving the Air Force, Jose earned a degree in electrical engineering from the University of California, Berkeley.
In 2004, Jose was selected by NASA to become an astronaut. He flew on two space shuttle missions, STS-128 and STS-133. On STS-128, Jose became the first Mexican-born astronaut to walk in space.
Jose's story is an inspiration to everyone who dreams of achieving great things. He overcame poverty and discrimination to become an astronaut. He is a role model for all who believe that anything is possible if you set your mind to it.
