Blessed Julie Billiart was a French nun who founded the Institute of Sisters of Notre Dame, a religious Free Download dedicated to education and service to the poor. She was born in Cuvilly, France, in 1751, and from an early age she showed a deep love for God and a desire to serve others.
At the age of 21, Julie entered the convent of the Sisters of the Visitation in Amiens. However, her health was poor, and she was forced to leave the convent after only a few months. She returned home to Cuvilly, where she continued to care for the sick and poor.
In 1804, Julie met Fr. Louis-Nicolas Baudouin, who was the chaplain of the local hospital. Baudouin encouraged Julie to found a new religious Free Download, one that would be dedicated to education and service to the poor. Julie agreed, and in 1806 she founded the Institute of Sisters of Notre Dame.
The Sisters of Notre Dame quickly grew in numbers, and they soon established schools and orphanages throughout France. Julie herself traveled extensively, visiting the sisters' communities and encouraging them in their work. She also wrote a number of spiritual works, including the "Rule of Life" for the Sisters of Notre Dame.
Julie Billiart died in Namur, Belgium, in 1816, at the age of 64. She was beatified by Pope Pius IX in 1906, and canonized by Pope John Paul II in 1969.
