Early Years
Che Guevara was born Ernesto Guevara de la Serna on June 14, 1928, in Rosario, Argentina. His father was a civil engineer and his mother was a pharmacist. Che Guevara was the eldest of five children.
As a child, Che Guevara was intelligent and curious. He was also a gifted athlete and enjoyed playing soccer and rugby. He was also a voracious reader and spent much of his time reading books about history, politics, and philosophy.
In 1948, Che Guevara began studying medicine at the University of Buenos Aires. During his time in medical school, he became increasingly involved in politics. He joined the Communist Party and became involved in student protests against the government.
The Cuban Revolution
In 1955, Che Guevara met Fidel Castro, who was leading a group of Cuban exiles in Mexico. Castro was planning to overthrow the Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista. Che Guevara was impressed by Castro's charisma and idealism, and he decided to join the Cuban Revolution.
In December 1956, Che Guevara and Castro landed in Cuba with a group of 82 guerrillas. The guerrillas fought a two-year guerrilla war against Batista's forces. Che Guevara played a key role in the war, and he quickly became one of Castro's most trusted lieutenants.
In January 1959, Batista was overthrown and Castro came to power. Che Guevara was appointed Minister of Industry and later served as president of the National Bank of Cuba. He also played a key role in the Cuban Revolution's social and economic reforms.
Guerrilla Warfare
After the Cuban Revolution, Che Guevara became a leading advocate for guerrilla warfare as a means of revolution. He wrote several books on the subject, and he trained guerrillas in Cuba and other countries.
In 1965, Che Guevara left Cuba to fight with the guerrillas in the Congo. He was captured and killed by Bolivian soldiers in 1967.
