Buruma is a keen observer of human nature, and he brings his sharp wit and incisive analysis to bear on everything he sees. He meets a wide range of people, from government officials to dissidents to ordinary citizens, and he paints a vivid portrait of a country that is at once familiar and foreign.
Buruma's journey is not without its challenges. He is often frustrated by the government's tight control over information, and he is sometimes met with hostility by those who resent his foreign presence. But he never gives up on his quest to understand China, and he ultimately comes away with a deep appreciation for the country's people and culture.
Barbarian Lost is a timely and important book that offers a unique perspective on one of the most powerful and enigmatic countries in the world. It is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand China's past, present, and future.
