By Mark Bowden

In June 2003, three American hikers were taken hostage by FARC guerrillas in the dense jungles of Colombia. For more than two and a half years, they endured unimaginable hardships, facing starvation, disease, and the constant threat of death. But through it all, they never gave up hope.

This is their incredible story of survival and resilience.

The three hikers were Marc Gonsalves, Thomas Howes, and Keith Stansell. They were all experienced hikers and had been planning their trip to Colombia for months. They had heard about the dangers of the FARC, but they believed that they could avoid them by staying on the main trails and not traveling at night.

But on June 20, 2003, the three hikers were ambushed by a group of FARC guerrillas. The guerrillas took them captive and marched them deep into the jungle. The hikers were held in captivity for more than two and a half years.

During their captivity, the hikers endured unimaginable hardships. They were starved, beaten, and tortured. They were also forced to witness the execution of other hostages. But through it all, they never gave up hope.

The hikers finally escaped from captivity in July 2008. They were rescued by a team of Colombian soldiers. The hikers were flown to the United States, where they received medical treatment and debriefing.

The story of the three American hikers who were held hostage by the FARC is an incredible story of survival and resilience. It is a story that will inspire anyone who reads it.
