In 1949, Trudeau was elected to the Quebec National Assembly as a Liberal member of Parliament. He quickly became a rising star in the party. In 1965, he was appointed Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada by Prime Minister Lester Pearson.
As Minister of Justice, Trudeau oversaw the of a number of important reforms, including the decriminalization of homosexuality. He also played a key role in the patriation of the Constitution in 1982.
Trudeau's Time as Prime Minister
Trudeau became Prime Minister in 1968. He was just 49 years old, the youngest person to ever hold the office.
Trudeau's time as Prime Minister was a period of great change in Canada. He introduced a number of progressive policies, including universal healthcare and multiculturalism. He also played a key role in the negotiation of the Canada-U.S. Free Trade Agreement.
However, Trudeau's time as Prime Minister was also marked by controversy. He was criticized for his handling of the October Crisis and for his support of the Vietnam War. He was also a target of the separatist movement in Quebec.
Trudeau's Post-Political Life
