Early Life

Martin Luther King Jr. was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on January 15, 1929. He was the son of Martin Luther King Sr., a Baptist minister, and Alberta Williams King, a schoolteacher. King's family was poor, but they were also very religious. King's father was a strong believer in the power of education, and he encouraged his son to excel in school.

King was a bright and inquisitive child. He loved to read and learn new things. He was also a talented musician, and he loved to sing and play the piano. King's parents were very proud of their son, and they knew that he was destined for great things.

Education

King attended Booker T. Washington High School in Atlanta. He was a star student, and he graduated at the top of his class. King then went on to attend Morehouse College, a historically black college in Atlanta. At Morehouse, King studied sociology and philosophy. He was also active in the debate team and the student government.

After graduating from Morehouse, King went on to attend Crozer Theological Seminary in Pennsylvania. At Crozer, King studied theology and ethics. He was also ordained as a Baptist minister. After graduating from Crozer, King returned to Atlanta to serve as the pastor of the Ebenezer Baptist Church.

The Civil Rights Movement

In 1955, Rosa Parks, a black woman, was arrested for refusing to give up her seat on a bus to a white man. This incident sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott, a year-long boycott of the city's buses by black residents. King was one of the leaders of the boycott, and he quickly became a national figure.

King's leadership was instrumental in the success of the Montgomery Bus Boycott. The boycott ended with the desegregation of the city's buses, and it marked a major victory for the Civil Rights Movement. King's success in Montgomery made him a target of violence and intimidation, but he never gave up on his dream of a more just and equal society.

In 1963, King led the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. This march was attended by over 200,000 people, and it was a major turning point in the Civil Rights Movement. King's speech at the march, "I Have a Dream," is one of the most famous speeches in American history.

King's work helped to bring about major changes in American society. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964, and he continued to work for peace and justice until his assassination in 1968.
